Smart ID & Passport Guide 2026
The "Green Mamba" ID book is phasing out. If you want to apply for SASSA, NSFAS, or open a bank account in 2026, you need the Smart ID Card. Here is how to skip the queue.
Why you need to switch

PHASING OUTSmart ID Card
Biometric chip security. Durable. Required for quick automated verification.
STANDARDThe Secret: Booking via Banks

What does it Cost?

Turning 16 years old
Re-Issue / Lost ID
Replacing a Green Book or Lost Card
How to Apply Online (eHomeAffairs)
You cannot just walk into a bank branch. You must book an appointment online first. Follow this exact process to avoid being turned away.
Step 1: Register Online
Go to the official eHomeAffairs Portal. Register a profile using your current ID number.
Step 2: Submit Application
Select "Apply for Smart ID". Fill in the digital form. Important: When asked for "Branch," select your BANK branch, not a Home Affairs office, if you want to skip the queue.
Step 3: Make Payment
You cannot pay cash at the bank. You must pay via EFT on the portal. Once paid, the system unlocks the "Booking" calendar.
Document Checklist
Don't get sent home. Bring these exact documents to your appointment.
"System Offline" Warning
Even bank branches rely on the DHA system. If Home Affairs is offline, the bank cannot process your ID.
Pro Tip: Book the earliest slot possible (08:30 AM). Systems usually crash later in the day due to high traffic.
