When Is the Portal Slowest?

The SASSA SRD portal handles millions of requests. It slows down during peak times:

  • 1st to 3rd of every month: Everyone checks their status when the new month starts. The portal gets hammered.
  • Payment dates: When SRD payments start rolling out (typically 24th-30th), traffic spikes again.
  • Mondays: The first working day of the week is always busier than other days.
  • Morning rush (08:00-12:00): Most people check during work hours or right after waking up.

Best Times to Check Your Status

Try these off-peak windows:

  • Weekday evenings, after 19:00: Most people have stopped checking by then. The portal is usually quick.
  • Early mornings, before 07:00: Very few people are online this early.
  • Weekends: Saturday and Sunday traffic is generally lower than weekdays.
  • Mid-month (10th-20th): The quietest period of the month. Portal works smoothly.

If Everything Is Down

Sometimes the entire SASSA system goes offline for maintenance or due to technical problems. If that happens:

  • Wait an hour or two and try again. Most outages are fixed quickly.
  • Try a different method. If the website is down, try WhatsApp or USSD.
  • Check social media. SASSA sometimes posts updates on their official channels when there are system issues.
  • If nothing works for more than a day, visit your nearest SASSA office in person with your ID.
We update this page based on user reports and our own checks of official channels. If you notice the portal is down and this page has not been updated yet, let us know at help@zawise.co.za.
